Born in Santander, Cantabria, Canales was trained in the youth teams of Racing de Santander. In 2006, Deportivo de La Coruña acquired 50% of his gaming rights as part of a deal that also included the return of Pedro Munitis to Racing, while Dudu Aouate and Antonio Tomás went to the other side of the negotiation.
In 2010, Real Madrid announced the signing of Canales on a six-year contract. In 2011, the player was loaned to Valencia, the team that bought him in 2012.
